NEW YORK — Today, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) released the below statement on Justice Stephen Breyer’s retirement from the United States Supreme Court.

“For nearly three decades on the country’s highest court, Justice Breyer played an important role in landmark rulings for a range of critical issues including health care access, criminal justice reform, voting rights protection, diversity in higher education, and race-conscious admissions. A self-avowed pragmatist, he believed it was more important to achieve ‘20 or 30 percent of what you’d like’ than being ‘the hero of all your friends.’ Case after case, he made rulings that made substantive progress and improved people’s lives. We honor Justice Breyer’s legacy on the bench.” said Margaret Fung, Executive Director of the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF).
