On August 28, 2019, AALDEF will host a theater party for “Felix Starro,” the musical by Jessica Hagedorn (AALDEF 2015 Justice in Action Award recipient) and Fabian Obispo, based on a short story by Filipino American writer Lysley Tenorio. This production of the Ma-Yi Theater Company is the first Off-Broadway musical written, directed, and starring Filipino Americans.

“Felix Starro” is about a famous faith healer in the Philippines, whose clients once included celebrities and big politicians. After falling on hard times, Felix decides to go to San Francisco for one last healing mission with ailing Filipinos in the Bay Area. Junior, Felix Starro’s 19-year-old, orphan grandson, goes along as his assistant. Unbeknownst to Felix, Junior plans to leave his grandfather behind and start a new life in America. The musical explores issues of faith, family, love, loss, betrayal, and what it means to be an undocumented Filipino immigrant in America.

The show is at Theater Row, 410 West 42nd Street, in New York City, and will be followed by a talkback with playwright Jessica Hagedorn. Tickets are $50. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact us at events@aaldef.org.
